Year 5 Half Term Round-up

As we wrap up this half term at Windrush Valley Prep School, it’s clear that Year 5 has been buzzing with activity and excitement. The pupils have immersed themselves in a variety of subjects, showcasing their creativity, analytical skills, and teamwork. Here’s a closer look at what we’ve been up to.

English Adventures

This term, our English lessons have taken us deep into the world of grammar. The children have become adept at identifying and using relative clauses and parenthesis, enhancing their sentence structures with these advanced grammatical features. We’ve also ventured into the creative realm of poetry, where the pupils crafted concrete (shape) poems. Employing a range of poetic devices such as alliteration, similes, metaphors, personification, and onomatopoeia, they created visually and verbally striking pieces. The focus on ambitious word choices ensured that every word counted, resulting in some truly remarkable poems. These will soon adorn our classroom display, serving as a testament to the pupils‘ hard work and creativity.

World Book Day was another highlight, with the children creating potato characters and dioramas depicting scenes from Harry Potter. The creativity and attention to detail in these projects were impressive, with pupils managing to capture the essence of their chosen characters and scenes remarkably well.

Mathematical Endeavours

In maths, our focus has been on deepening our understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages. The children have tackled these concepts with enthusiasm, gaining confidence in their abilities to manipulate and understand numerical relationships.

Scientific Exploration

Our science topic this term was forces, and the pupils engaged in several hands-on experiments to explore gravity and friction. Using Newton meters, they measured the forces at play and conducted fair test experiments that included dropping balls into flour to create craters of varying sizes. These experiments not only taught them about scientific principles but also instilled a sense of curiosity and investigative spirit.

Sports and Teamwork

Year 5 has shown great enthusiasm and skill in sports, participating in competitive netball and football matches. The level of skill and understanding of these team sports has been impressive, with children demonstrating excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. More information about the sports results can be found by reading our latest sports results blog.

Historical Insights

In history, we have delved into Britain’s colonial past, engaging in thought-provoking discussions about the British Empire‘s pros and cons. These discussions have helped the pupils develop a nuanced understanding of historical events and their long-term impacts.

Performing Arts

A significant part of this term has been dedicated to preparing for the Key Stage Two performance. The pupils have worked incredibly hard to learn their lines, songs, and dances. Their dedication paid off in a performance that was both exciting and polished.

Additionally, the Chipping Norton Music Festival provided another platform for our pupils to showcase their talents. Those who participated delivered performances that were both polished and enjoyable, reflecting their hard work and passion for the arts. The children have demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and a commitment to excellence across all their activities. As we look forward to a well-deserved holiday, we can reflect on a term well spent and anticipate even more exciting opportunities in the months to come. Thank you to all the parents and guardians for your continued support, which plays a vital role in our pupils‘ success. We wish everyone a restful and enjoyable break.
