The curriculum exceeds the requirements of the National curriculum with languages, performing arts and conservation science featuring prominently in class timetables. Excellent examination results have been achieved, year on year.

Job Title SENCo
Salary Dependent on experience and qualifications.
Contract Permanent. Part-time, Term Time only.
Qualified to Degree and teaching qualification. National Award SENCo [NASENCO] or prepared to undertake the NPQ/SENCo qualification.
Experience Strategic development of the school’s Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) provision and oversight of the day to day operation of that policy with the aim of raising SEND pupil achievement.
Knowledge & Skills Specific Responsibilities and Key Tasks

  • To lead support and provision for pupils with additional needs and/or disabilities
  • To support the teachers and other staff with their responsibility to deliver inclusive quality-first teaching and support for the development and education of children with additional needs/disabilities
  • To support the teachers and other staff with their responsibility to deliver targeted, impactful interventions to diminish the differences between pupils with additional needs/disabilities and their peers
  • To liaise with, and manage deployment of, specialist and external agencies to support inclusion for pupils with additional needs and disabilities
  • To support the best possible outcomes for pupils with additional needs and disabilities
  • Support staff to put provision in place to ensure the progress of pupils with SEND improves relative to those without SEND
  • Ensure that the school carries out its statutory responsibilities regarding all students with an EHCP
  • Support staff in understanding the needs of SEND pupils
  • Monitor progress towards targets for pupils with SEND
  • Analyse and interpret relevant school, local and national data
  • Liaise with staff, parents, external agencies and other schools to co-ordinate their contribution, provide maximum support and ensure continuity of provision

Teaching and Learning

  • Support the identification and disseminate the most effective teaching approaches for individual pupils with SEND
  • Work with staff to develop effective ways of bridging barriers to learning through: assessment of needs; monitoring of teaching quality and pupil achievement; target setting; keeping accurate records
  • Collect and interpret specialist assessment data to inform practice
  • Undertake day-to-day coordination of SEND pupils’ provisions through close liaison with staff, parents and external agencies
  • Work with teachers and support staff to ensure all pupils’ learning is of equal importance and there are high and realistic expectations of pupils

Leading and Managing

  • Provide professional guidance to staff to secure good teaching for SEND pupils
  • Advise on, and contribute to, the professional development of staff, including whole school INSET provision
  • Provide regular information to the Headteacher and Governing Body on the evaluation of SEND provision

General Responsibilities

  • To pursue the aims of the school in a positive manner and promote its ethos
  • To work co-operatively with the whole staff team to achieve continuous improvement with constant regard to quality in both teaching and learning
  • To teach pupils according to their individual needs
  • To implement the school’s behaviour policy
Personal Qualities
  • Degree and teaching qualification
  • National Award SENCo [NASENCO] or prepared to undertake the NPQ/SENDCo qualification
  • An understanding of the characteristics of effective teaching & learning in order to support pupils/students with SEND and DPP
  • An understanding of the SEND Code of Practice, Equality legislation and the national agenda for SEND
  • Good ICT skills and record keeping
  • Proven ability to work sensitively and effectively with colleagues in helping them to improve their classroom practice
  • Understanding of the strategies to secure whole school improvements and effective self-evaluation
  • Clear understanding of the current educational agenda, whole school developments in education and strategic curriculum issues
  • Good professional networks/contacts
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and pay attention to detail
  • High level of interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain a positive profile with pupils, staff and parents
  • Excellent written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills
