Year 3 Half-Term Update – A Term of Learning and Growth

This term has been a busy and rewarding one for our Year 3 pupils at Windrush Valley Prep School. From sporting achievements to academic progress, the children have embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and determination.

Sporting Achievements

Year 3 pupils have excelled in Physical Education this term, participating in a range of inter-house competitions, including tag rugby, hockey, and cross-country running. Many also had the opportunity to compete in matches against other schools, demonstrating not only their sporting abilities but also teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship.

Scientific Exploration

In Science, pupils focused on two key topics. They explored ways to reduce food waste, considering how small changes can make a big difference in sustainability. Additionally, they investigated the different types of joints in the human body, learning about their functions and importance in movement.

Personal Development in PSHE

PSHE lessons this term centred around self-awareness and emotional resilience. Pupils learned valuable assertiveness techniques and explored strategies to manage overwhelming feelings. These discussions helped them develop confidence in expressing themselves and navigating different social situations.

Discovering the Past in History

The class took a fascinating look back at Stone Age life, comparing it to modern-day lifestyles and habitats. Pupils explored how early humans lived, hunted, and built shelters, drawing comparisons with the way we live today. This hands-on learning approach helped to deepen their understanding of history and its impact on the present.

Exploring the World in Geography

Geography lessons focused on rainforests, with pupils examining the Amazon and Sherwood forests. They explored the differences between temperate and tropical rainforests, learning about the unique climates, plant life, and ecosystems that exist in these environments.

Religious Education – A Look at Hindu Traditions

Religious Education provided some exciting moments as pupils had the opportunity to explore the inside of a Hindu Mandir. They learned about the significance of Hindu festivals, including Diwali and the story of Rama and Sita, as well as the Holi festival, which celebrates the tale of Holika and Prahlad.

Developing Key Skills in Mathematics and English

In Mathematics, pupils worked on reasoning skills, the column method, and multiplying two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers. These lessons helped to build their confidence in problem-solving and numerical fluency.

In English, pupils actively engaged in The English Speaking Board programme, delivering impressive presentations and poetry readings. Grammar lessons introduced them to subordinate conjunctions and clauses, enhancing their understanding of sentence structure.

As we reflect on this term, it is clear that Year 3 has made excellent progress across all subjects. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and look forward to another exciting term ahead!
