Year 2 Half Term Update: A Journey of Discovery and Creativity at Windrush Valley Prep School

The start of the academic year has been a truly wonderful one for our Year 2 class at Windrush Valley Prep School. The children have embarked on an exciting journey filled with creativity, exploration, and inspiring learning experiences that have sparked their curiosity and imagination. From becoming budding authors to learning about significant historical figures, this half term has been packed with activities that have allowed Year 2 pupils to dive into new subjects with enthusiasm and joy.

Budding Authors: Writing Traditional Tales and Explanations

One of the highlights in English this term has been the opportunity for our Year 2 pupils to become authors themselves. They have crafted their own traditional tales set in faraway kingdoms, letting their imaginations run wild as they created unique stories and characters. It’s been wonderful to see their ideas come to life on the page, with each child taking pride in their work and showcasing their storytelling skills.
In addition to writing traditional tales, the children also tackled explanation texts. They created detailed pieces on the fascinating life cycle of butterflies, explaining the process from egg to caterpillar, chrysalis, and finally, butterfly. This activity helped them develop a deeper understanding of writing for different purposes, while also expanding their knowledge of the natural world.

Exploring Lives of Significant People in History

This half term, our focus in History has been on learning about significant people who have made an impact on the world. Year 2 has been introduced to figures such as Charles Darwin, Amelia Earhart, Walt Disney, Katherine Johnson, Nelson Mandela, and Wangari Maathai. The children have loved learning about each person’s accomplishments and contributions to society, as well as discovering some fun facts about them.

Through engaging discussions and activities, the pupils have learned how these individuals changed history in their own unique ways. Whether it’s Darwin’s theory of evolution, Earhart’s pioneering flights, Disney’s creative legacy, Johnson’s calculations for NASA, Mandela’s fight for equality, or Maathai’s environmental work, the children have been inspired by these extraordinary lives.

Trips to Cadbury World and the Science Museum

Learning went beyond the classroom this term with two fantastic educational trips. The first was a visit to Cadbury World, where the children got to reinforce what they learned about John Cadbury in Year 1. They discovered how Cadbury introduced chocolate to his shop and established the town of Bourneville for his employees. A highlight of the visit was the chance to write their names in melted chocolate and watch chocolate being tempered, which was a thrilling experience for our young learners.

During Space Week, Year 2 explored the wonders of space travel with a trip to the Science Museum, We the Curious. Tying in with their studies on Katherine Johnson, the children learned what it takes to become an astronaut and how rockets are launched into space. The experience reached new heights with a visit to the Planetarium, where the children enjoyed a virtual journey through space, sparking their curiosity about the universe.

Embracing the School Spirit: Harvest Festival and Assembly

Amidst all their learning, Year 2 also played an active role in the school community. The children worked hard to learn their lines and songs for the Harvest Festival, bringing a sense of joy and celebration to the event. They also performed in their class assembly, proudly sharing what they have learned this term with their peers and teachers.

A Busy and Rewarding Half Term

It has been a busy and rewarding half term for our Year 2 class at Windrush Valley Prep School. They have embraced each learning opportunity with excitement and dedication, building a strong foundation for the year ahead. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and achievements and can’t wait to see what the rest of the academic year has in store for this fantastic group of young learners.
