Year 5 and 6 Complete Bikeability Training

At Windrush Valley Prep School, we are always looking for enriching opportunities that support our pupils’ independence, confidence, and life skills beyond the classroom. This term, pupils in Years 5 and 6 took part in the nationally recognised Bikeability training programme, run in partnership with the Windrush Bike Project.

Bikeability is the modern-day cycling proficiency scheme, developed to ensure that children are equipped with the essential skills and knowledge to ride safely and responsibly on the roads. Delivered by qualified and experienced instructors, the training provided pupils with the tools to become confident cyclists who understand how to share the road with care and awareness.

The training took place over several days and followed the national standard for cycle training. It began with Level 1, which was completed in the school grounds. Here, the children were assessed on their bike control, balance, signalling, and starting and stopping techniques. This foundational level ensured that every pupil had a good grasp of the basics before progressing to more advanced road cycling.

Level 2 took the children out onto local quiet roads, where they were introduced to real-life traffic situations in a controlled and supportive environment. Under close supervision, they learned how to identify and deal with hazards, communicate with other road users, and navigate junctions and road signs effectively.

What made the training so impactful was the combination of theory and hands-on practice. Pupils not only enhanced their technical skills but also grew in confidence with each ride. They enjoyed the sense of independence that came with cycling responsibly, and many expressed how empowered they felt to be able to ride their bikes more safely in their local communities.

Our thanks go to the instructors from the Windrush Bike Project, whose professionalism and enthusiasm made the course both educational and enjoyable. Their dedication ensured that every pupil, regardless of experience level, was supported and encouraged throughout the programme.

At Windrush Valley Prep School, we believe that learning extends beyond books, and Bikeability is a perfect example of how practical experiences can teach lifelong skills. We are incredibly proud of our Year 5 and 6 pupils for embracing the challenge with enthusiasm and maturity.

Well done to all who took part – happy and safe cycling!
